Illustrated Texts in the Secondary Social Studies Classroom

Using illustrated texts as part of instruction in the secondary classroom can have many benefits, research specifically cites; building a strong classroom community, leveling background information for all students, engaging reluctant readers in literacy activities, and promoting critical connections between the content at hand and students. This course aims to highlight how illustrated texts can be implemented to elevate understanding of the content with personal narratives, images, and accurate retellings of historical events.

Who is this course for?

This course is for any secondary Social Studies teacher that wants to incorporate illustrated texts as an engaging way of introducing students to content or wants to provide another tool to promote a well-developed understanding of historical perspectives into their classroom while also supporting English Language Arts standards. In this self-paced, online learning course, you will build upon your toolkit of instructional strategies to understand and effectively implement the use of illustrated texts in the social studies classroom.
