STAAR Content Boot Camp: Enhancing Content For All

A series of 3 workshops designed to equip students for the rigors of STAAR

The STAAR Content Boot Camp is a three-part course designed to improve your students' STAAR performance. We're offering three individual workshops throughout December and January which tackle abstract concepts, organization, and information review.

12/06/2016 | Helping Students Become Powerful Thinkers by Mastering Abstract Concepts

A one-day workshop which tackles the tricky abstract concepts that give your students trouble. We'll teach The Concept Mastery and Concept Comparison Routines which help students analyze concepts and make the abstract more concrete through a partnership learning experience between teacher and student.

Using graphic organizers, students and teachers will analyze the characteristics of key concepts, and use scaffolded higher order thinking steps to create memorable definitions. Both routines teach the in depth, analytical thinking necessary for understanding complex content concepts.

01/18/2017 | Text Structure + Graphic Organizers = Rigorous Content Review for STAAR

A one-day workshop highlighting the visual learners of your classroom. We'll use the Order Routine to teach students how to organize information by relationships/text structures, and then how to create their own graphic organizers of those relationships which leads to higher order thinking.

The graphic organizers help students generate mental images to go along with information and then to construct graphic representations of critical content. After extended use of the Order Routine in the classroom, students will be able to transfer knowledge of the process to assessments and demonstrate a mastery of content.

03/02/2017 | Question Exploration: Rigorous Review Using Essential Questions

Students often have more content knowledge than is evident in their responses to critical questions. Often students are just not skilled at accessing their knowledge. The Question Exploration Routine is an explicit process that shows students how to unpack and organize their learning so they can respond with the high level answers we hope for. Students who use this routine express excitement about recognizing how much they know. The QEG is the perfect review prior to any assessment- especially STAAR.

Participants will receive instructor's Guidebook and all materials necessary for implementation in the classroom.
