LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) provides educators with a core understanding of language structure and helps them gain in-depth instructional information to complement their teaching practices. Rather than replacing the core basal reading program, LETRS brings deeper knowledge of reading instruction by addressing each component—phonemic awareness; phonics, decoding, spelling, and word study; oral language development; vocabulary; reading fluency; comprehension; and writing.
Developed by literacy expert Louisa C. Moats, Ed.D. LETRS provides the deep foundational knowledge necessary to understand how students learn to read, write, and spell—and why some of them struggle. This course develops teachers' abilities to diagnose and overcome students' reading challenges while providing practical strategies that work for every type of learner.
This 12 days training is open to all, however only Special Education teachers in Region 13 will receive LETRS books. The sessions cover the following content:
LETRS Foundations (4 days): LETRS Foundations prepares teachers for the more rigorous, in-depth modules of the overall LETRS professional development program. This module addresses the differences between good and poor readers; aspects of language that are important for literacy; the components of effective instruction; principles of systematic, explicit instruction in each component; and instructional activities that can support the implementation of any comprehensive core program.
Modules 1-3: The Challenge of Learning to Read; The Speech Sounds of English; and Spellography for Teachers: How English Spelling Works
Modules 4-6: The Might Word: Building Vocabulary; Getting Up to Speed: Developing Fluency; and Digging for Meaning: Teaching Text Comprehension.
