Strengthening Tier 1 Reading Instruction Series: The Six Syllable Types

In this video online course, participants will view and practice modeled instruction of the six syllable patterns of English words, and learn how to guide applied practice with various multisensory activities.  The instruction is designed to introduce the syllable patterns to students in approximately 5 minutes, and then embed multisensory practice within a word study block of an ELA (TEKS-based) curriculum with Kindergarten through 2nd grade students.  All teachers can enhance their vocabulary instruction of struggling readers once they are exposed to the knowledge of the six syllable patterns.  Teachers who are English Language Learners may also find that knowledge of the six syllable patterns unlocks the mystery of how to pronounce, decode and spell English words.

Participants must complete an end of course test with a passing score of 80% before receiving their Continuing Education credits and certificate.  The test may be taken as many times as necessary to obtain a passing score.

District and campus curriculum coordinators or lead teachers are encouraged to use this course within professional learning communities or grade level teams as professional development for strengthening core reading instruction.  Downloadable resources should be printed and used during hands on activities while pausing the video.  Each participant may register and view or review the course independently, complete the end of course test, and receive their CEU certificate.  The course may continue to be viewed until the end of course date as a reference when implementing strategies with students throughout the school year.
