Children's phonological awareness includes a continuum of skills that develop over time. In order for children to learn to read print, they must be aware of how the sounds in words work. They must understand that words are made up of individual speech sounds, or phonemes. Phonemic awareness involves segmenting, blending, and manipulating sounds.
In this video-based online course, Comal ISD’s Early Literacy Coordinator Jennifer Johnson leads teachers, therapists, and parents through exploration of each step along the phonological continuum, from Listening Comprehension to Phonemic Awareness. You will see demonstration of evidence-based strategies for directly teaching these critical underlying reading abilities. You'll also receive guidance on how to integrate into ELA lessons for students K-2 or students that are just beginning to read.
