Learn how to create powerful, focused, and student-centered interactive notebooks for English Language Learners in your secondary social studies classroom.
A true interactive notebook creates student ownership of content area knowledge and skills, because it is a resource that students build throughout the school year. This allows them to process and meaningfully interact with academic vocabulary, creating connections from unit to unit.
We will explore organizational systems and strategies to ensure that the interactive notebook engages students, promotes their metacognitive skills, and serves as effective means of formative assessment. Participants will create a mini interactive notebook using the sheltered instruction strategies and tools (e.g., visuals, sentence stems, foldables) modeled during the workshop. As a participant, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with other secondary social studies teachers to create interactive notebook activities for upcoming units.
