Federal & State Program Updates, Including McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance/ Transportation Meeting

These meetings will provide detailed updates in the morning session on Federal Title Program Legislation, CNA/CIP/DIP/Annual Evaluation, Family Engagement, Community Resources, and Federal Program Documentation. Title I Provisions for Homeless Education will be covered in the afternoon.  

It will be presented in a three-part series, with a collaborative workgroup session in June.

September 27   Afternoon Topic:  Higher Education Consideration for Students in Homeless situations

Participants will be provided with information to assist high school students in preparing an educational portfolio that highlights success in 9th-12 grade to be used when students leave high school.  The portfolio will also house important documents to register for college or to track the information needed to pursue a career.

November 29, 2016 Afternoon Topic:  Disability Rights for Students

Guest speaker for the afternoon, Meredith Parekh.  Meredith Parekh is a staff attorney on the Special Education team at Disability Rights Texas. She will present on the rights of homeless students in the education system, specifically pertaining to students experiencing homelessness who have a disability. Participants will learn about timelines for requesting special education services for students suspected of having a disability and who are highly mobile due to homelessness, common special education interventions and schools’ responsibilities for students who are already receiving special education services and are experiencing additional struggles due to their homelessness, and the rights and responsibilities of schools to provide services to students with disabilities who are transition age (14-22).

The Federal program Director Meetings will assist district and campus administration responsible for administering NCLB and State Compensatory Education programs. Updates may include: Legislation, Performance Based Monitoring, PEIMS, Title I Provision for Homeless Education, Family Involvement, Grant administration and requirements.

ESSA Consolidated Application for Funding - participants will receive updated information on the new ESSA application, planning process, and best practices.

Afternoon Topic:

Transportation Meeting

Guess speaker will be from the Texas Homeless Education Office.  Transportation requirements for homeless students will be discussed.  Transportation scenarios, concerns and issues will be addressed.
