Paraprofessional Certification Training - June 2017

This program is for those interested in becoming a teacher's aide.

The Texas Education Code (TEC) requires that all Title I schools employ a highly qualified workforce – including paraprofessionals, and Region 13 is ready and willing to help you meet this requirement.

This three-day certification training consists of an orientation to the role of paraprofessionals, training on the stages of learning, and scientifically based strategies for paraprofessionals to assist in reading, writing, and math instruction.

Participants will also take a locally developed assessment to demonstrate knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics. This assessment meets the requirements for ensuring that all paraprofessionals are highly qualified.

Training modules include:

  • overview of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA)

  • Response to Intervention (RtI)

  • confidentiality

  • overview of TEKS/STAAR

  • literacy basics (phonological/phonemic awareness, fluency, writing, word study/vocabulary, and comprehension)

  • data collection

  • tools for supporting reading, math and the writing process.

To complete this certification training, participants must:

  • complete the entire 18-hour training consisting of an orientation to the role of paraprofessional, training on the stages of learning, and scientifically based strategies for paraprofessionals to use to assist in reading, writing, and math instruction

  • pass a locally developed academic assessment demonstrating knowledge of, and the ability to assist in, instructing reading, writing, and math
